Energy Efficient Lighting

When deciding upon the layout of your new home, one feature you may wish to include is energy efficient lighting. This concept is comprised of two main components: daylighting and energy efficient lighting products and appliances. Integrating these two factors into one's home not only reduces annual energy costs, but also benefits the environment.

Daylighting

The theory of daylighting is very simple. It basically refers to the use of natural light to illuminate a building as much as possible. This can be achieved by the addition of properly placed windows or opening a building in a manner that allows more light to come in. Common concepts that are included in daylighting techniques include the following:

  • The use of reflection to spread out and distribute natural light
  • Controlled distribution of natural light in such a manner that it reaches all possible spaces
  • The reduction of glare caused by natural lighting in order to provide a comfortable environment
  • The use of various natural light sources (skylights and windows, placed in such a manner that light enters from different areas at different times of the day) to enhance the interior environment

The implementation of these four practices produces the best possible naturally lit environment for building inhabitants.

Energy Efficient Lighting Appliances

Recently, a highly efficient type of light bulb has emerged on the market at an affordable price. Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs can take the place of the more traditional incandescent lamps that are common in most homes. They produce the same amount of light at a much lower wattage, thus reducing energy consumption (and costs) by up to 75%. Replacing your incandescent light bulbs with CFL bulbs may have a larger upfront cost, but over time, will save you money.
