Fluorescent Lights and Energy Benefits
Most people have used incandescent lights bulbs in their homes since they were young. Recently there
has been an influx of fluorescent bulbs, specifically compact fluorescent light bulbs, which have made
it into homes across America. This is due to the fact that fluorescent bulbs can produce the same amount
of lumens (measurement of light) as incandescent bulbs while significantly cutting the amount of electricity
needed to run them. It is a price-friendly and eco-friendly way to produce the same light we are used
to enjoying.
Incandescent Bulbs
The problem with incandescent bulbs is the loss of electricity due to heat. Incandescent bulbs produce
a lot heat in the process of creating light, resulting in high energy consumption. Additional energy
consumption can occur from cooling costs, since air conditioners must run longer periods of time to
counter the heat.
Fluorescent Bulbs
Since fluorescent bulbs use a method involving electrons and gases to produce light, the bulb produces
less heat, making it a more efficient bulb. Most fluorescent bulbs are 5 times more efficient than incandescent
bulbs and can still produce the same amount of lumens.
Less electricity also means less harmful emissions required for energy production. Compact fluorescent
lights alone can reduce power plant emissions by 450 pounds.
Fluorescent bulbs also have an average 10,000 hour lifespan, giving them a shelf life 6-10 times greater
than incandescent bulbs.
